When you visit bandung and search for Bandung hotels or when you go to whatever city in the world whether it is for business trip or just pure leisure you will be given an option by your travel agent on which class of hotels you want to stay in. They would start with a question “Excuse me sir, would you prefer a five star or lower?” You might go “I’ll go with a four star ones, I don’t want hotels lower than that”. Or you may also reply “ It depends, my budget per stay is around USD 200”.
Then your agent shows you a variety of hotels that suites your criteria. You suddenly pick a well known brand name that already has ‘mind share’ in your mind. But what is it that actually differentiate from let’s say a 3 star hotel to a 4 star hotel or a 4 star with a 5 one?
A fast and easy answer is as below:
* (one star) — low budget hotel
** (two stars) — budget hotel
*** (three stars) — middle class hotel
**** (four stars) — first class hotel
***** (five stars) — luxury hotel
But if you re-search further you’ll realize that the classification system is much more complex than that. It can be different from countries to countries. For example in German there is a 5 star hotel system. Europe in general has a system that is called the European Hotelstars Union system that has a 10 level system which is an original 5 star system added with an S (superior) stage before the next star .
Its classified like this :
* — Tourist
* S – Superior Tourist
** — Standard
**S — Superior Standard
***– Comfort
***S — Superior Comfort
****– First Class
****S — Superior First Class
*****– Luxury
*****S — Superior Luxury
This system is has quite a detail description of the facilities and amenities of the hotel. For example super luxury hotel The Luxury star hotels need to attain high expectations of an international guest service. The Superior Luxury star is only awarded with a system of intensive guest care as explain here in Wikipedia.
For Asian countries to differentiate and award a hotel are usually done by governments or associations like PHRI (Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association) and IAPINDO (Indonesian Hotel Experts Association). These associations also has cooperation with the Touristy Ministry to the determine the star level.
But an important thing to know is that star classification does not correlate with the room rate. Why is that so? Because price depends much on location, popularity of the hotel, etc. A three star hotel in tourist destination will always stay 3 unless they expand the hotel width or add a swimming pool or an elevator.
The best thing to do as candidate customer is exercise your right to check the room and the facilities before you pay. In some hotels you can actually bargain for price. Don’t forget your first impressions in the front desk really matters. If you are a hotel owner you must know what customers really want in the front desk. Because if you do it will greatly affect your efforts on how to increase hotel revenue.
Cheers
